Meet Alison

Welcome to Shine Counselling — a space where support is grounded in experience and care.
My name is Alison, and I’m a Registered Social Worker with more than 20 years of experience in the mental health field. Over the years, I’ve held a long-standing role with Alberta Health Services, working extensively in adolescent psychiatry and acute care. As a result, I’ve had the privilege of supporting individuals and families through a wide range of complex mental health challenges, both in hospitals and in community-based settings.

In addition to my professional experience, I hold a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology. I use an evidence-based approach that is carefully tailored to each person’s unique needs. Clients often describe me as down-to-earth, personable, and easy to talk to. Most importantly, I strive to create a safe and welcoming space where people feel comfortable and genuinely heard.

If you’re looking to learn more about Shine Counselling or connect for support, I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to get in touch to book a free 15-minute consultation or ask any questions.

On a personal note, I have called Cochrane home for over 25 years, where I live with my husband and our dogs. Growing up in Canmore nurtured my deep appreciation for the outdoors, which continues to be a meaningful part of my life. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, mountain biking, paddle boarding, and kayaking—activities that help me stay grounded and connected. I believe that time in nature can be a powerful form of self-care, and I often encourage clients to explore what brings them calm, clarity, and balance in their own lives.

My Specialties

I specialize in individual therapy for adults and adolescents who are navigating a wide range of emotional and mental health concerns. Clients often come to therapy experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, grief, or the lasting effects of trauma. Others may feel stuck, disconnected, or unsure of how to move forward.

My approach is collaborative and respectful. It’s grounded in evidence-based practices and tailored to meet each person’s unique needs and goals. Whether you’re seeking clarity, healing, or meaningful change, therapy can be a powerful step toward feeling more grounded and in control of your life.

In addition to my work with adults, I have a strong background in adolescent psychiatry and years of experience supporting teens and their families. I understand the challenges that often arise during the teenage years, especially when it comes to communication, identity, and emotional well-being.

Therapy for adolescents focuses on building self-awareness, managing emotions, and navigating the pressures they face. I also work closely with parents and caregivers to help strengthen connection and understanding within the family system.
